Portugal Homes has shared much of its history with the Portugal Golden Visa, and even though it’s no longer possible to invest in real estate and get residency in Portugal and the EU, we have not given up on it. In fact, we have reinvented our approach to one of the world’s most famous and coveted Golden Visa programmes and have expanded our portfolio to the investment funds option.
What is the Investment Funds Option for the Portugal Golden Visa?
The is a government-approved investment program that encourages international capital through certified options in exchange of residency status.
Real estate purchase used to be among them and was undoubtedly the most popular option. However, the option was revoked in October 2023, which led to widespread confusion about the entire program’s availability.
However, the Golden Visa remains operational through several other options, including private equity or venture capital funds. With a €500,000 investment in funds, applicants can obtain residency in Portugal and get all the same traditional Golden Visa benefits as they would with a real estate investment. There’s no need to relocate full-time, while remaining on track to eventually obtain EU Citizenship.
This option offers something unique that the real estate Golden Visa didn’t allow: the ability to get Portuguese residency, without the complexities often associated with property transactions. If you're planning for family, business, or personal freedom, the fund route allows you to invest confidently.
Each fund must have a minimum maturity of 5 years and direct most of its capital, at least 60%, towards Portuguese companies. From sustainable development and tech innovation to tourism and energy, investment funds offer access to some of the country’s most promising sectors. For many, this route offers a lower-maintenance experience than navigating the property market, without compromising on return potential or residency benefits.
