Lagos is a historic coastal town in the vibrant Western Algarve, known for its rich maritime heritage and spectacular natural surroundings. Today, it stands out as one of the Algarve’s most popular and appealing holiday destinations. With charming cobbled streets, excellent restaurants, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, Lagos seamlessly blends traditional Portuguese culture with golden beaches and modern attractions.

    1. Discover Ponta da Piedade

Ponta de Piedade, one of Portugal’s most breathtaking natural landmarks

One of Portugal’s most breathtaking natural landmarks, Ponta da Piedade is famous for its dramatic golden limestone cliffs, arches, and sea stacks rising up to 20 meters above crystal-clear water. Explore the coastline on foot via scenic clifftop trails, descend the steps to postcard-perfect viewpoints, or join a boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard tour to experience the formations from the water.

    2. Relax at Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo ranks among the world's best beaches

Tucked between Praia da Dona Ana and Ponta da Piedade, Praia do Camilo is a small but stunning cove consistently ranked among the world’s best beaches. A wooden staircase of around 200 steps leads down to soft sand and turquoise water, offering unforgettable views along the way. While lively in summer, it becomes a peaceful, almost hidden paradise in the quieter months.

    3. Wander Through Old Lagos (Centro Histórico)

Old Lagos is rich with history

Lagos’ old town tells the story of its past as a major maritime and trading hub from the 14th and 15th centuries. Stroll along cobblestone streets lined with shops, cafés, and historic buildings, all within easy walking distance. Highlights include the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, the richly decorated Church of St. Anthony, the historic Mercado de Escravos, and the preserved Gate of Saint Gonçalo, part of the old city walls.

    4. Enjoy Lagos Marina

    Modern yet laid-back: Lagos Marina

Modern yet laid-back, Lagos Marina sits just across the river from the old town and offers a pleasant contrast to the historic centre. The palm-lined promenade is perfect for a leisurely walk, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafés overlooking the water, as well as market stalls selling souvenirs and local goods. It’s an ideal spot to unwind, especially at sunset.

    5. Visit Forte da Ponta da Bandeira

Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, part of Lagos' defensive history

Built in the late 17th century to protect the harbour, this well-preserved seaside fortress offers insight into Lagos’ defensive history. Inside, you’ll find a small chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara and decorative tiles dating from the 18th century. The fort also hosts local traditions, including the annual 29th Swim in August, when residents gather for a symbolic midnight dip.

Small, scenic, and packed with history, Lagos is a coastal city that delivers far more than its size suggests.

Getting Around Lagos & the Algarve

Lagos is easy to explore on foot, with flat areas around the marina and a compact city centre—just wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones. Buses, taxis, and regional trains make it simple to reach other Algarve towns, Lisbon, and even Spain.

    Shopping in Lagos

From artisan ceramics and local art to designer fashion, Lagos offers shopping for every taste and budget. Don’t miss the promenade, Rua Cândido dos Reis, and the Mercado Municipal de Lagos for fresh seafood and regional produce.

    Arriving via Faro Airport

Lagos is served by Faro International Airport (FAO), the Algarve’s main gateway and Portugal’s third-busiest airport. Modern and well-connected, it offers numerous low-cost flights and easy onward travel across the region.
